This “chaupai” (quatrains) is cited in Sundarkand where Lord Rama is requesting with the vast and mighty sea for a pass-through to Ravana's Lanka. This is probably the most misunderstood “chaupai” of Goswami Tulsidas Ji (1532-1623). The word “ताड़ना” might mean “तारना” or “ताडयेत्” or simply “ताड़ना”. Never a single word has caused such damage to someones reputation as it has done to Tulsidas Ji's.

Depending upon the choice of the meaning of the word “ताड़ना” entire context of the sentence changes. Lets establish how?

If we choose the meaning to be “तारना”, then the meaning of the "chaupai" translates beautifully to:

A Drum, an Illiterate, Poor people (I would not interpret it as Dalit’s), Animals and Women all have the rights to be uplifted.

Considering the ills of society in 15th century it seems apt that Tulsidas ji comapared women with poor people, animals, drum and illiterates, as all of them did not have say over their wishes and destiny. But lot of the modern people would not be happy with Tulsidas ji’s example, but we should keep in mind that the society in 15th century was not what we see today and woman did not have same rights as man (for that matter not even today!!).

The second interpretation by some people is based on ताडयेत् which in Sanskrit means strict discipline or even beating. So the meaning gets transformed entirely.

This interpretation is popular amongst people who are vehement opposes of Tulsidas Ji. This meaning has never made sense to me because Tulsidas ji regarded women in high esteem and advocated for equal rights for both man and woman which is evident from the "dohey" (couplets) and "chaupais" in Ramcharitmanas or otherwise. People should bear in mind that he loved his wife a lot and her shaming him publicly was the reason he abandoned all worldly matters and wrote Ramcharitmanas.

The third interpretation is some work of a genius guy!!!

Interpretation becomes A Drum, an Illiterate Poor and Bad Women (a woman full of vices) all require a beating to get the best out of them!!! The specialty about this interpretation is that the words "Gawar" and "Pashu" are adjectives to "Shudra" and "Nari" respectively.

On a lighter note “ताड़ना” also means a sincere stare (not groping), therefore all women deserve a look by all means!!

Ramcharitmanas was composed by Tulsidas Ji in Awadhi, a common mans language. Ramayana until then was available in Sanskrit which was considered a difficult language to learn.

Sundarkand is the penultimate Chapter/Episode of Ramcharitmanas. The Rāmcaritmānas consists of seven books, of which the first two, entitled Childhood Episode (Bal Kaand) and Ayodhya Episode (Ayodhya Kaand), make up more than half the work. The later books are Forest Episode (Araanya Kaand), Kishkindha Episode (Kishkindha Kaand), Pleasant Episode(Sunder Kaand), Lanka Episode (Lanka Kaand), followed by an epilogue titled Uttar Kaand. The work is composed in quatrains called chaupais, broken by dohas or couplets, with an occasional sortha and chhand, the latter being a hurried metre of many rhymes and alliterations.

  3. I think, neither Tulsidas, nor Samudra, would like to say these worlds towards SITAJI, PARVATI or MAHISHASURMARDINI.

    This is quoted by men who deliberately wish to underestimate women due to their own inferiority complex. A noble man would never ever bring this discussion to the table in presence of a lady.

Let us take shudra as a serviceman if a serviceman works more he will earn more and that can only possible with discipline , woman have more energy and wearing gold is a controling factor for the same and this lightening mind if women is not busy she would involved into gossips with other women and than it will turn into a daily sop like of today and therefore women should be busy either work or with children

    1. History tells us that women and shudr were maltreated in the society before coming the Arabs and Europeans. They were depressed in many fold. The word of Tulsi in Ramcharitmanas is the example of such dirty minded people. Tulsi was a great poet we respect him for his literary work but not blindly, we also critise if he forwarded such wrong mentality.

  6. hi.. i am alok srivastava and i want to translate this 'doha' in my hindi language.i will describe each term one by one. 1. jo log shudra ko dekh ke, ya chamar ya nich jati ke logo ke sath bhed bhav ka bartav karte hai,,tulsi das ne un jaise sare logo se kaha ki tum shudra ko pratadit karo,,use tadna do..yani ki us shudra ko dekh ke jo tumari tarah hi ek insaan hai,,tumare man me jo ye bhavna ati hai ki tum unche ho aur wo nicha hai.. apni is soch ko pratadit karo,,kyuki ye soch hi shudra soch hai,,nich soch hai.. isko pito..khub pito.. jab tak ye soch khatm na ho jaye...lakin log us shudra ko hi pratadit karne karne lgte hai.. agar mera comment achchha laga to pure dohe ka sahi arth samjhne ke liye mujhe call kar sakte hai 9911522747 par..thank you

I had also studied about this doha and our teacher explained this doha means that this all things are punishable and i have also seen this meaning in many books which is published by indian govt. And state govt. This defined this all things are punishable and this are happening continoues with thousand of years.

    2. Tulsidas ne soch ko pratadit karne ki nahi balki shudra ko hi partarit karne ko saaf saaf Kaha hai. Shudr ke baare mein to koi baat nahin aaj tak partarit horaha hai. Par naari ke baare mein aisa likhna? Is ka kya matlab hai? Naari kya koi jati caste hai?
      Is chaupal mein saaf bataya gaya hai ke jaise dhol ya janwar ko peet-te ho waise hi naari ko peeto usko control karne.

  8. The script during those times were written on palm tree leaves and instead of Books, these were called Tadpatra or Tadan. Tulsidas ji simply said all these four categories have the right to Education.

  9. तुलसीदास जी… के कहने का मंतव्य यह है कि….. अगर हम ढोल के व्यवहार (सुर) को नहीं पहचानते ….तो, उसे बजाते समय उसकी आवाज कर्कश होगी …..अतः उससे स्वभाव को जानना आवश्यक है ।
    इसी तरह गंवार का अर्थ …..किसी का मजाक उड़ाना नहीं …..बल्कि, उनसे है जो अज्ञानी हैं… और प्रकृति या व्यवहार को जाने बिना उसके साथ जीवन सही से नहीं बिताया जा सकता …..।
    इसी तरह पशु और नारी के परिप्रेक्ष में भी वही अर्थ है कि….. जब तक हम नारी के स्वभाव को नहीं पहचानते ….. उसके साथ जीवन का निर्वाह अच्छी तरह और सुखपूर्वक नहीं हो सकता…।
    इसका सीधा सा भावार्थ यह है कि….. ढोल, गंवार, शूद्र, पशु …. और नारी…. के व्यवहार को ठीक से समझना चाहिए …. और उनके किसी भी बात का बुरा नहीं मानना चाहिए….!
    और तुलसीदास जी के इस चौपाई को लोग अपने जीवन में भी उतारते हैं……. परन्तु…. रामचरित मानस को नहीं समझ पाते हैं….
    जैसे कि… यह सर्व विदित कि …..जब गाय, भैंस, बकरी आदि पशुओं का दूध दूहा जाता है.. तो, दूध दूहते समय यदि उसे किसी प्रकार का कष्ट हो रहा है ….अथवा वह शारीरिक रूप से दूध देने की स्थिति में नहीं है …तो वह लात भी मार देते है…. जिसका कभी लोग बुरा नहीं मानते हैं….!

  10. In awadhi language, 'Tadna' means 'to monitor' or 'to keep an eye on'. Thus the Chaupai means the work assigned to these categories should not be left to themselves, but should be monitored also.

  13. What Tulsidas thought and wrote is important, what you interpret is not important.
    If people follow Ramayana by your interpretation then there must not be any cast-system or no inhuman behavior with shudras and women.

    Not a single intellectual went against the wave in respective period. So we should understand the Tulsidas had written what was a practice in that time.

    And one more thing shudras meanS OBC not untouchables.

  15. The people who wrote these Doha has better understanding about what they are writing.what tulsi has written was practiced in contemporary society.not even tulsidas objected on this issue. Now presenting presenting vodka as a holy water not going to change the property of liqour.
    Yes it is hard to accept that our glorious past is full of black spots but yet you can't change the history.

    Tulasidas , while undoubtedly a great writer, was also a product of his times. He echoed the prevalent social beliefs.

    I think there are a couple of more such instances in the Ramacharitmanas where the statements made/ actions taken would not be acceptable in modern India. For example Ram exiled Sita because her virtue was commented upon by some third person.

    There is another answer here which has tried to twist the meaning of the word “Tadana/ tarana” ताड़ना . From the original meaning scolding/ berating/ reprimanding , an attempt has been made to twist it to “to test/ to examine”

    The context is that the sea refuses to provide way for Rama and his army to cross to Lanka. Ram ,then in anger, threatens the sea to dry it up completely.

    I am repeating below he original chaupai and the translation provided by Gita Press Gorakhpur. I leave it to the readers to decide the correct meaning.

    Sundara Kand Chaupai 58, Doha 3

    katehi pai kadari pharai koti jatana kou sincha,

    binaya na måna khagesa sunu datehi pai nava nicha. 58.

    Though one may take infinite pains in watering a plantain it will not bear fruit unless it is hewed. Similarly, mark me, O king of birds, a vile fellow heeds no prayer but yields only when reprimanded.

    dhola gavå° ra sudra pasu nåri, sakala tåranå ke adhikåri.3.

    The god presiding over the ocean clasped the Lord’s feet in dismay. Forgive, my lord, all my faults. Ether, air, fire, water and earth all these, my lord, are inert by nature. It is Måyå (Cosmic Nature) which brought them forth for the purpose of creation under an inspiration from You; so declare all the scriptures. One would attain happiness in life only by remaining where he has been placed by the Lord. My Lord has done well in giving me a lesson; but You have fixed certain innate treat for everyone. A drum, a rustic, ashudra, a beast and a woman all these deserve reprimand. By the Lords glory I shall be dried up and the army will cross over; but this will bring no credit to me. Your command, however is inviolable; thus declare the Vedas, I shall do at once what pleases You.

  19. In properly understanding a part of any text one has to keep the following in mind:

    1. Context and who has said it: The lines "dhole Ganwar, ....taadan ke adhikari" has been uttered by Samudra (who felt guilty of obstructing Ram's movement against a wrong-doer, with a purpose of the establishment of Dharma). It is said with a sense of remorse.

    2. Suitable Meaning of the word: Tadana means disciplining (the act of). I will cite a Sanskrit shloka: "laalayet panch varshani, dash varshani tadyet". Does it mean that one must beat one's son every day after he attains 5+ but under 16 (5 < son's age < 16) years? Certainly not. This 5-16 is the age at which the son should be disciplined, not beaten up. Similarly, a drum is tied by strings in all directions properly only then it will produce the right kind of sound. This is disciplining a drum. A ganwaar (rustic fellow) must be disciplined so that he observes the etiquette properly else he would act and speak boorishly. Likewise the shudras - who are not susanskrita (trained in conducting themselves in socially accepted manner) and so animals (pets - ask a person who keeps a good pedigree dog - he will tell you the details) and so the women (who may have a lot of emotional intelligence/rationality, but lack in the logical intelligence/rationality, which is needed for a civic life). They all must be disciplined suitably.

    3. purpose of citing: The purpose of citing should be 'vada' or the discussion for the sake of knowing, and not 'jalpa', a discussion for the sake of vanquising the opponent or 'vitanda' for getting victory over the opponent by wrongly interpreting, abusing, threatening, using physical force, etc. For knowing more of Vada, jalpa and vitanda read some book in the Indian philosophy (Nyaya Darshana). There you will also read the rules as to interpreting the text.

  21. It represents that tulsidas have no respect ..... why he written these controversial line.....why himself not eradicate the caste in india .... showing double meaning will not eradicate caste in india..... because many higher caste still dominate lower caste
